Commissioner Kos in Montenegro to mark 20th anniversary of restoring independence

Today, Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos is in Montenegro to mark the 20th anniversary of the restoration of the country’s independence and to reaffirm the EU’s strong support for Montenegro’s EU accession process.

Commissioner Kos will deliver a keynote speech for the occasion when she will tell the people of Montenegro that the next chapters of the EU and Montenegro’s shared history will be written together.

Prior to this, she is holding meetings with Prime Minister Milojko Spajić, President Jakov Milatović and President of the Parliament Andrija Mandić to discuss the country’s progress on its path towards EU membership, as well as the next steps in advancing accession negotiations.

Montenegro continues to advance steadily and consistently in the accession process. The country has opened all negotiating chapters and provisionally closed 14 chapters to date, reflecting continued progress in implementing EU-related reforms.

Maintaining the current reform momentum and broad political and societal support for the European agenda will be essential for further progress on Montenegro’s EU path.
