Commissioner Kos travels to Moldova to present EU support in the energy crisis

Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos will travel to the Republic of Moldova on 3-4 February 2025. This mission takes place in the context of the EU's on-going efforts to support the Republic of Moldova in tackling the severe energy crisis provoked by Gazprom on both sides of the Nistru River. It also marks Commissioner Kos' first mission to Moldova and is an opportunity to take stock of the great strides of Moldova on its European path.

On 31 January, the Republic of Moldova agreed with the EU's offer for a €30 million emergency assistance package to tackle the current energy crisis. Through this support, the EU will finance the purchasing and transporting of natural gas to the Transnistrian region, to help restore electricity and heating for the region's more than 350.000 inhabitants. This package will also allow the purchase of further electricity to the Right Bank of the Nistru River. In parallel, the EU is preparing a comprehensive support package to finance Moldova's gradual transition to full energy independence and drastically reduce the reliance on external energy assistance by the end of 2026.

Marta Kos, Commissioner for Enlargement, said: “Nobody should have to endure winter without heat and light. The help we provide is from the people of the EU to the people of Moldova.  We are providing €30 million in emergency support to Moldova to help the country in the energy crisis and avoid a humanitarian crisis in the Transnistrian region. This is a first step. In parallel, we are helping Moldova connect to the international energy market and gain control over its long-term energy supplies, so they will never be subject to energy blackmail again.
During her visit, Commissioner Kos will meet with President of Moldova, Maia Sandu; Prime Minister, Dorian Recean; Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration, Cristina Gherasimov; Deputy Prime Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization, Dumitru Alaiba, and Speaker of the Parliament, Igor Grosu. She will also meet with Moldovan civil society, women leaders and youth. A press conference with President Maia Sandu will take place on 4 February 2025 at 09:30 EET (10:30 CET) and will be live-streamed on EBS here.
