It is a great pleasure to welcome the delegations from Albania and North Macedonia to this inaugural meeting of the screening process. Today is an important moment for everybody, we have reached a new level in our cooperation.

The first intergovernmental conferences (IGCs) opening the accession negotiations with North Macedonia and Albania are taking place today in Brussels. These IGCs mark the beginning of a new, decisive phase in the accession process of Albania and North Macedonia to the European Union.

Today in Baku, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson met with President Ilham Aliyev and Azeri Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov to strengthen the existing cooperation between the EU and Azerbaijan.

On 14 July, High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell, and Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Oliver Várhelyi will be in Montenegro for the 11th EU-Montenegro Stabilisation and Association Council.

President von der Leyen will be tomorrow in Skopje, North Macedonia where she will first meet Stevo Pendarovski, President of North Macedonia. The President will then meet Dimitar Kovačevski, Prime Minister.
